Leaving a Jetty

On leaving a jetty, always remember:

  • Pre-start checks
  • Check departure route is clear
  • Communicate your plan to the crew
 

Wind blowing the boat off the jetty

 
  • Release lines
  • Push bow out 20°
  • Boat drifts away from jetty
  • Control boat against tide and current


 

 


Leeward jetty side (heavy wind)

  • Fenders at bow
  • Attach bow spring
  • Engage forward at jetty, fulllock. Gear in out, in out.
  • Roll bow against jetty
  • Stern swings out
  • Engage neutral
  • Release spring
  • Spin wheel to opposite lock
  • Engage reverse
  • Stern swings into wind
  • Move away

 

Leeward jetty side (light wind)

 
  • Essential to push bow out at least 20°
  • Engage gear with engine straight to protect stern of boat, as it pulls away
  • When in doubt, using the bowline as a spring shouldalways get you out of trouble. It is important not to dawdle with the controls.
