Leaving a Jetty

On leaving a jetty, always remember:
- Pre-start checks
- Check departure route is clear
- Communicate your plan to the crew
Wind blowing the boat off the jetty
- Release lines
- Push bow out 20°
- Boat drifts away from jetty
- Control boat against tide and current
Leeward jetty side (heavy wind)
- Fenders at bow
- Attach bow spring
- Engage forward at jetty, fulllock. Gear in out, in out.
- Roll bow against jetty
- Stern swings out
- Engage neutral
- Release spring
- Spin wheel to opposite lock
- Engage reverse
- Stern swings into wind
- Move away
Leeward jetty side (light wind)
- Essential to push bow out at least 20°
- Engage gear with engine straight to protect stern of boat, as it pulls away
- When in doubt, using the bowline as a spring shouldalways get you out of trouble. It is important not to dawdle with the controls.
