Daily Engine Check

Author: Basil Mosenthal

This article on the daily engine check is taken from the sailing book Cockpit Companion by Basil Mosenthal.

It covers the kind of checks you should run on your marine engine whenever you go on the water. A daily engine check is always needed - even if the engine was running well yesterday.

Before starting:

  • Engine compartment: Take a quick look - ensure the bilge is clear, no oil or water leaks, no loose wires and that the belts are OK
  • Raw water inlet: Valve open, strainer clear
  • Fuel filter: With a transparent filter check for water or dirt. Drain off if needed.
  • Engine oil refill: Check with dipstick. Do not overfill

Starting:

  • Switch over to starting battery. Start the engine with the gearbox in neutral, and run at medium revs to warm up
  • Cooling water: Is it running from exhaust?
  • Batteries charging, correct oil pressure. Look at the instrument panel

While running:

  • Check the stern gland periodically for leaks. Tighten grease filter (if fitted) as needed.
  • Gearbox oil: Check periodically when the engine is running and warm. Remember to top up with gearbox oil, not engine oil.
