Before starting your boat engine:

Before you go sailing you should check the diesel engine is running well. Even if the boat engine was running well yesterday, you still need to check it today.

  • Raw water inlet: Check the Valve is open and strainer clear
  • Diesel fuel filter: With a transparent filter check for water or dirt.  Drain off if needed,
    • Engine compartment: Take a quick look. Is the bilge clear, are there any oil or water leaks? Check there are no loose wires and that the belts are OK.
    • Engine oil refill: Check with dipstick. Do not overfill

    Starting the marine diesel engine:
    • Switch over to starting battery. Start the boat engine with the gearbox in neutral, and run at medium revs to warm up
    • Cooling water: Is it running from exhaust?
    • Check the batteries are charging and there is correct oil pressure. Look at the instrument panel.

While the diesel engine is running:
    • Check the stern gland periodically for leaks. Tighten grease filter (if fitted) as needed.
    • Gearbox oil: Check periodically when the boat engine is running and warm. Remember to top up with gearbox oil, not engine oil
