Another Fishy Tale from Paul Knight

Bookmark and Share

A chapter in Amazing Fishing Stories has just had an amusing update worthy of inclusion in the original book...

The first story revolved around a tiny pool, or 'pot', on Northumberland's River Coquet which was never fished because it was thought too small to hold salmon. Two anglers on a week's holiday were enjoying an extended lunch, having failed to catch anything for the past three days, when another friend joined them and demanded to know why, when they had fished everywhere else, they hadn't bothered with this particular pot.

"Nothing doing on the good pools, so certainly can't be arsed to go down there!"

The friend went down and immediately caught a salmon, and so they named the pool the CBA Pot - Can't Be Arsed - although, to their knowledge, it has never produced another fish since. Or at least, until now!

This autumn (2011) the same friend was unsuccessfully fishing the Coquet when, in desperation, he went again to the CBA Pot. He sat down for a cigarette before starting to fish, letting the fly dangle a few metres below him in the current, the rod wedged between his knees. The rod was then practically wrenched from his legs, but he managed to grab it and land a bright silver 8 pound salmon, his only fish for the whole week.

His problem after that was trying to convince his sceptical friends about the truth of this tale, and that it had actually happened at the infamous pool in question.

"We should rename it the Jammy Sod Pot, if you ask me!" suggested one.
