A week or so ago we heard that a yacht had been aground near Weir buoy in the entrance to the River Ore. After a passing fishing boat had failed to pull her off, the Harwich Lifeboat came out and managed to tow her into deeper water. A few days later some friends of ours left the river and found that there was not as much water as they would have expected at around half tide in the vicinity of the Weir buoy.

This info was soon posted on to the eastcoastrivers.com message board, and as a result Stephen Read and his team from Felixstowe Ferry were alerted to update their March 08 survey of the River Ore entrance. They found that the South Shoal is extending eastwards from the Shingle Street shore.
Accordingly the starboard-hand Weir and port-hand Oxley buoys marking the entrance have been moved to slightly new positions.
The latest advice is to pass close to Weir when entering or leaving the river and to close with the shore only gradually until nearer the bungalow – keeping an eye on your echo sounder.
Details and waypoint information for the new buoy positions are on the aforementioned website, where you can also find many useful, and often amusing postings by helpful people who take the time to share experiences and invaluable local knowledge with their fellow sailors .
As this story shows, it is well worth checking on eastcoastrivers.com for the latest news before you set out on your next passage or cruise up or down our part of the East Coast.
