WOBBLING ON A NATIONAL ICON
Saturday 1st December saw us climbing and scrabbling and wobbling over a national treasure as we launched Paul Gelder's new book, Gipsy Moth IV A Legend Sails Again from on board the grand lady herself at the Earls Court Boatshow.
Were it not for Paul Gelder, Gipsy Moth IV would still be entombed in concrete at Greenwich. Thanks to the efforts of Paul, Yachting Monthly Magazine the UKSA and many others, she has been rescued, restored and has just completed her second circumnavigation. Paul's new book tells the full dramatic story.
Joined by UKSA, Gipsy Moth IV's present owners, past crew and fans of the boat, Paul talked about the battle to save Gipsy Moth, the extensive restoration and the thrill of sailing this historic boat - thrills and spills in fact, Sir Francis Chichester had often commented that Gipsy Moth was no smooth ride. In fact her sometimes violent motion during the second circumnavigation produced what one skipper called 'Gipsy Moth love bites' as you ricocheted from one sharp edge to another.
Boat show visitors were also treated to a first hand account of the eventful 610 day second circumnavigation - a life changing journey for scores of youngsters - some from disadvantaged backgrounds. The most dramatic event was of course Gipsy Moth's shipwreck in the South Seas. Thanks to the skill, bravery and dedication of all involved she was thankfully rescued ( once again) although not before a few hair-raising and potentially heartbreaking days of uncertainty. The huge screen at the show showed stunning images of the the whole project.
Thanks must go to Jake Kavangh from who conducted the lively interview (broadcast around Earls Court Boatshow) and UKSA for their support.

Gipsy Moth IV A Legend Sails Again is available from all good chandlers and bookshops.
